the girls lived

DAVID HIGDON

off the whispering side

of the road – hushed, dropped

by fingertip from a second

story window. One faceless

sneaker touched down on

the concrete night, toeing

the grate of an overflow

drain. We crossed rain

-pelted streets, jumped a ditch,

hopped up on anger, gasoline

and spit, coffee grounds drift

from lonely cars toward unlit

destinations: factories,

the hospital, and parking lots.

David Higdon earned his BFA from Watkins College of Art and Design and works as a creative director. His writing is published or forthcoming in Lucky Jefferson and Exposition Review. He lives with his family in Louisville, Ky, where he is completing a collection of poetry and a novel.
