NINTH LIFE

Let’s try this again.

A cat disappears. Nothing.

Many questions.
A half-empty bowl.

Never knowing
if she was kidnaped
or simply knelt
down under
the moon: Basta!

Too horrifying
to think of theft.

Still we pace
like pall-bearers

when the neighbor’s
tom comes home.

Silence in
the teeth of night.
